Salvador Moncada established and is now Director of the Wolfson Institute for Biomedical Research (WIBR), a centre for strategic medical research at UCL. A large number of successful spin-out companies have originated at the WIBR including Ark Therapeutics, Arrow Therapeutics, CereXus, Inpharmatica and ProAxon.
Salvador qualified as a medical doctor in El Salvador before doing a PhD at the Royal College of Surgeons in London. Became Director of Research at The Wellcome Research Laboratories, where he oversaw the development of a number of drugs, including lamotrigine (anti-epileptic), zomiltriptan (anti-migraine), atovaquone (anti-malarial) and the initiation of the project which led to the discovery and development of lapatinib (anti-cancer). He is on the scientific advisory board of NicOx, a biopharmaceutical company that specialises in nitric oxide-donating drugs.
Salvador received a knighthood in the 2010 New Year's Honours List for services to Science.
